Every horse is different. My 2 yr old is a big horse for his age and racing him early has really helped with his conditioning. He is really strong and will be better at 3 due to racing as a juvenile. I work with an organization that retires racehorses that have often been injured to the point that the only future they possess is as pasture pets. So yes, you are right, there are many suburban and rural horses who live less than idyllic lives.
